Substitute James Keatings scored a late equaliser to rescue Dundee United from defeat against Dumbarton at Tannadice.

The Tangerines had slipped into arrears after only four minutes, David Smith on target at the far post following a cross by Tom Walsh deflecting off Paul Quinn.

United responded with Sam Stanton too high and Scott Fraser firing directly at keeper Scott Gallacher, who was then rounded by the recalled Jordie Briels as he located only the side-netting from a narrow angle.

Billy King’s delivery was wastefully headed over by Paul McMullan in front of an unguarded goal following the break, although home keeper Harry Lewis also turned Walsh’s long-range strike onto the crossbar.

But Keatings stepped up to curl in a superb free-kick after fellow replacement King was fouled with only three minutes remaining – thus avoiding a second consecutive defeat.
