Dundee United are out of the Scottish League Cup after a 2-1 second round defeat to city rivals Dundee at Dens Park.

Faissal El Bakhtaoui crashed into the top corner on the half-hour mark to spectacularly give the hosts the lead. But Billy King cancelled it out before the break.

However, Paul McGowan restored the advantage for the Dark Blues on 64 minutes – and it proved to be enough to secure them a quarter-final home tie with holders Celtic.

Goalscorer King actually had a decent late chance to reply for a second time, only to drag his shot wide with goalkeeper Scott Bain well out of position.

Dundee certainly had the better of it during the opening half with Marcus Haber heading wide and El Bakhtaoui also hoisting over.

El Bakhtaoui should next have broken through when failing to hit the target after getting in ahead of William Edjenguele, although he then superbly thumped in off the underside of the crossbar.

But United were back level ten minutes later when Sam Stanton crossed for King to provide the finish at the far post.

That was until former United midfielder Scott Allan laid off Rorie Deacon’s delivery and McGowan struck high past on loan keeper Harry Lewis.

The Southampton youngster then made a brilliant save to keep out Haber’s header before King failed to double his tally when Bain lost his bearings at the other end.

Fellow summer arrival Paul McMullan also curled narrowly over for the visitors deep into added time.
