Dundee United defeated rivals Dundee 4-3 on penalties to win Group C of the Scottish League Cup at Dens Park, while their opponents still progressed as one of the best runners-up.

Summer recruit Paul McMullan gave the visitors the lead on the stroke of half-time but Mark O’Hara equalised with an hour of the tie completed.

Both Faissal El Bakhtaoui and United substitute Logan Chalmers then had their spot-kicks saved during the penalty shoot-out, until Roarie Deacon missed with the crucial final attempt.

Billy King had already struck against an upright from Scott Fraser’s pass by the time the opening goal arrived, Sam Stanton running and delivering for McMullan to apply the finish.

United almost had another when King dragged McMullan’s ball wide after the break, while Sofien Moussa had a header ruled out for offside at the other end.

But former Tangerines midfielder Scott Allan then crossed for O’Hara to level matters with still half-an-hour remaining.

Both Deacon and Kevin Holt might soon have improved upon that as on loan keeper Harry Lewis reacted well, and Jack Hendry also headed onto an upright near to the end.

However, Southampton youngster Lewis went on to deny both El Bakhtaoui and Deacon during the penalty shoot-out to eventually win it for the visitors – and their delighted followers numbering almost four-thousand.
