Sam Stanton scored twice inside the opening fifteen minutes as Dundee United returned to winning ways at Dumbarton.

The 23-year-old immediately curled the visitors in front from around twenty-yards after Matty Smith linked up with Billy King.

Hibs loanee Stanton then added his second of the contest following Scott Fraser’s low corner on the quarter-hour.

King could have had another but proved too high while home keeper Scott Gallacher tipped over from Scott McDonald after the break.

Dumbarton later had Craig Barr dismissed following two bookable offences, the second of which was for simulation.

United caretaker manager Laurie Ellis, 37, ruled himself out as “too young” to succeed Ray McKinnon after the game despite a first win in three attempts.
