Dundee United chairman Stephen Thompson has told manager Peter Houston that he must cut his squad size if he wants to bring in another defender.

Houston is keen to add Lithuanian international Irmantas Zelmikas to his ranks following a recent trial as replacement to Andy Webster, who returned to Rangers at the end of last season after a successful loan spell at Tannadice.

“I want a centre-half in,” Houston told the Scottish Herald. “But we need to move people on before we get anyone in.

“I`ve added Barry Douglas and Filip Mentel and I know we can`t keep bringing players in without putting anyone out to release up a bit of money.”

Meanwhile, AEK Athens chief scout Vassilis Borbokis watched the Arabs suffer defeat in their final friendly to Wigan Athletic on Sunday afternoon.

“If he goes away thinking we`re anything other than a decent side then good luck to them,” Houston added.

“We knocked the ball around really well and scored a great goal. Wigan were fast, physical and really good on the ball. I hate losing, but I`m happy with the way it went.”
