Dundee United left the capital with maximum points after Johnny Russell and Gary Mackay-Steven were each on target in a 2-0 victory at Hibernian.

Russell earned them the lead midway through the second-half and Mackay-Steven soon added another to keep the visitors in fourth place in the table.

Gavin Gunning drilled straight at goalkeeper Graham Stack early on the away side while Leigh Griffiths struck an upright in reply following George Francomb’s corner.

Hibs keeper Stack then parried Jon Daly’s header from a Keith Dixon free-kick before the striker failed to get a touch on an inviting Mackay-Steven cross after the break.

Tangerines defender Gunning in turn sliced a clearance wide of his own goal and Mackay-Steven threatened on three separate occasions at the opposite end until Russell followed up to open the scoring on 66 minutes after Stack blocked from John Rankin.

Seven minutes later Mackay-Steven doubled the lead with a shot from the edge of the area that Stack should probably have saved before his opposite number Dusan Pernis later denied substitute Garry O’Connor.
