Dundee United boss Craig Brewster has been sacked after a string of dismal results left the side rock-bottom of the SPL.

Brewster, whose playing skills gave him legendary status at Tannadice, won just two league matches out of 28 since taking the reins at the club. Yesterday’s (Sat, Oct 28) 5-1 loss at Falkirk proved to be the final straw, even though he vowed to ‘stick it out’ after the match.

Brewster told the club’s official site, www.dundeeunitedfc.co.uk: ‘I wish to put on record my gratitude to the Directors, coaching staff, players, all Dundee United support staff and, in particular, Dundee United supporters for their loyal and continuous backing. I wish Dundee United every success in the future.’

Derek Robertson, a director of Dundee United, told the site: “Following detailed discussions, it was agreed that it was now in the best interests of Dundee United, Craig Brewster and Malky Thomson to part on amicable and mutually respectful terms.

‘We are hugely disappointed that Craig Brewster`s latest spell with the Club should end in this way. However, the future of Dundee United is dependent on securing a position based on results and all parties recognise that results and performances have been less than acceptable and less than Dundee United supporters deserve.’

Robertson added that Brewster left the club with his integrity intact. Early rumours suggest Brewster could make an immediate return to management with Dunfermline.

Raith Rovers boss Craig Levein is an early candidate to replace Brewster at Tannadice, as the Arabs aim to climb the SPL.

Visitors who took part in our latest poll might not be too happy with this development. Only 17 per cent said Brewster should step down, while 30 per cent said he shouldn’t and 53 per cent said ‘not yet’.

Is anybody actually surprised? I think Jimmy Calderwood could well have had a point the other week when he said anyone else with that record would have been booted long ago. But let’s make sure the next boss is the right boss…it’s early enough to sort things out this season – things aren’t that bad…I hope.
