Championship leaders Dundee United were held to a 1-1 draw by bottom-of-the-table Brechin City at Glebe Park.

The visitors went ahead courtesy of striker Scott McDonald’s close-range finish around the half-hour mark.

But Sean Crighton headed an equaliser from an early second-half corner before United’s Tam Scobbie was sent-off for a second bookable offence in added time.

Home keeper Graeme Smith was tested by Billy King, McDonald and Scott Fraser during the opening half, although the only goal arrived as McDonald took advantage of decent approach work involving King, Sam Stanton and Stewart Murdoch.

However, when Isaac Layne’s effort was deflected behind following the break, the unmarked Crichton rose to head in from the corner delivered by Liam Watt.

Goalscorer Crichton again went close before both Layne and Paul McLean were off-target, with McDonald too high in reply following an inviting cross by Jamie Robson.

Finn Graham next drew a fine save from visiting keeper Harry Lewis, while lively substitute Connor McLennan was once again threatening, until being pulled back by the dismissed Scobbie.

From the resultant free-kick, fellow replacement Jordan Sinclair was denied as on loan Lewis fell low to prevent a late concession.
