Dundee United continue to seriously contest the leadership of the Championship table following a narrow 1-0 victory against Ayr United at Somerset Park.

A sixth-minute finish from Tope Obadeyi was all that eventually separated the two sides but it was enough to keep the in-form visitors now unbeaten in a dozen games.

The Tangerines broke purposefully as Obadeyi was sent chasing away during the early exchanges and rounded goalkeeper Greg Fleming for the winning goal.

Their opponents responded with Garry Harkins and Paul Cairney both wide of the mark, although Jamie Adams missed an even better opportunity when hoisting Nicky Devlin’s low delivery over from a couple of yards.

Meanwhile, on loan Tony Andreu shot wide for the visitors after the break and Blair Spittal’s later attempt lacked sufficient penetration to trouble the keeper.
